Pet leasing is now illegal in New York.
New York has become the third state to ban the practice.
The move means Long Island pet stores can no longer offer a deal where customers make monthly payments on animal with the option to buy it later.
With leasing, if payments are not made, the animals are re-possessed.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo says "pet leasing" traumatizes the animals and owners and preys on low-income consumers.
