Safety technology that aims to keep drivers safe may actually be leading to more accidents, according to AAA.
The agency says drivers are relying too much on high-tech features, such as lane departure warnings, automatic braking and blind spot monitoring.
“They think the technologies will do something they won’t and wind up getting into trouble,” says spokesman Robert Sinclair.
Sinclair says the study found when it came to blind spot monitoring, 80 percent of drivers did not know the technology's limitations – that it might not always see fast-passing cars or bicyclists.
The study showed that 30 percent relied on the system to change lanes without visually checking.
AAA recommends drivers read up on how its driving technology actually works, including its limitations. It’s also recommending that dealerships spend time with customers so they understand the system.
