AAA: Drivers rely too heavily on technology inside car

AAA says drivers are relying too heavily on safety technology located inside their vehicles and that it could make them unsafe drivers.
Most newer-model vehicles contains Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). The technology can alert a driver when someone is in their blind spot or if they are driving too quickly to property slow down.
AAA says that when used properly, ADAS can prevent 40 percent of all crashes in the United States every year and prevent more than 1 million injuries. But the agency says that the systems are often used improperly.
Research by AAA’s Foundation for Traffic Safety found that most drivers who have ADAS do not know or fully understand the limitations. For example, many blind spot monitors can only detect other vehicles and not bicyclists or pedestrians. But AAA says that many drivers do not know this.
AAA recommends drivers use the systems, while also looking for themselves. The agency also recommends drivers educate themselves to better understand the new safety systems in their cars.
The agency is also putting more responsibility on automakers and car dealers. They say that dealers should educate their customers about ADAS before they drive off the car lot.
