Threat forces evacuation of Rockland County school

Posted: Updated:

A written threat led to the evacuation of a Rockland County school this morning.

School officials at South Orangetown Middle School in Blauvelt say a written threat was found around 9:40 a.m. The threat was not directed at anyone specific, and emergency procedures were put into effect.

Police with bomb-sniffing dogs and the Rockland County Sheriff's Bomb Disposal Unit investigated and gave the all-clear before 11 a.m.

School Superintendent Robert Pritchard says the schools emergency plan worked as they have practiced doing it over the last few weeks.  “The great news is that the students are safe and back in class. We are investigating the nature of the message, which was disturbing enough that we wanted to evacuate the building.”

Pritchard says all the students are safely back in class.
