Yonkers police officer shoots dog in self-defensePosted: Updated:
A Yonkers police officer is recovering after being attacked by a dog.
Officials say the officer was attacked while they were responding to a call about a dispute on 94 Jervis Road around 9:20 p.m. Monday. They say a 10-year-old boy claimed his grandmother was abusing him.
Police say as they were walking into the residence two large dogs came out. One of the dogs, a pit bull, bit one of the officers on the ankle and latched on to him. The officer fired one shot, and the dog ran off.
Despite an extensive search of the nearby woods, the dog has not been found.
Police determined the child was special needs child, and he was taken to a hospital to be examined.
Child Protective Services was notified after police found the house was in disarray and covered in dog feces.
The officer was treated at a hospital for minor injuries and released.
