What New Jersey Transit is calling a “minor” train derailment slowed the Thursday evening commute for hundreds of New Jersey residents.
A spokesperson for the agency says that around 6:20 p.m. Thursday, Montclair-Boonton Line train No. 6279 experienced a “minor, slow-speed derailment” shortly after it left New York Penn Station. One set of wheels on one car came off the track.
The incident suspended rail service into and out of New York Penn Station for a time, greatly affecting the evening commute.
Photos sent to News 12 New Jersey showed hundreds of passengers crowded inside Penn Station waiting to go home.
Many commuters tell News 12 that this was the latest in a long history of community issues with NJ Transit.
“NJ Transit is unreliable. If I take the train five days a week, three out of five is a delay or cancellation,” one commuter said.
This is the third day in a row that NJ Transit has experienced some sort of issue. A tree fell onto the tracks Monday causing delays on the Morris & Essex Line. A person was struck and killed by a train on Tuesday, also causing delays.
Gov. Phil Murphy called for an audit into NJ Transit earlier this year after a long period of delays and cancellations.
