Multimillion-dollar makeover of 2 Port Chester schools gets underway

PORT CHESTER -

A groundbreaking celebration was held Tuesday to kick off the start of a multimillion-dollar makeover at two Port Chester schools.

JFK and King Street elementary schools will both be getting new looks thanks to a nearly $80 million capital project approved by voters.

Upgrades at JFK include eight new classrooms, a playground and a full-size gym. Right now the cafeteria and gym share space.

"It shows the support the community has for our school and it's going to be so beneficial for our students because ultimately it will improve the quality of education for our students," says JFK Principal Judy Diaz.

At King Street Elementary, the upgrades will be similar to those of JFK. The school will also get a new entry area.

"It's not just about adding for enrollment, it's also for modernizing," says Superintendent Edward Kliszus. "A new gym will be a modern facility, air conditioned and used by the entire community."

Construction is expected to be complete by 2020.
