The Fairfield Police Department held its first mile-long walk on Jennings Beach Sunday morning in support of the K-9 unit and its role in PTSD support.
Whether they walked on two legs or four, the Fairfield community came out by the hundreds for the event.
"I'm just thrilled to see this turnout and everybody coming out showing us how important dogs are to our town, to our community and how much they are a part of our town,” said Fairfield First Selectman Mike Tetreau.
K-9 Jake led the walk. Jake is named after a Fairfield Marine who lost his battle with PTSD.
While raising money for the K-9 unit's essential supplies, food and training, the walk also spread the message of Fairfield native Lance Corporal Jake Pettit, who lost a battle with PTSD not too long ago.
"It's really overwhelming to see the community's support,” said Fairfield Police K-9 Sergeant Hector Irizarry. “I am so happy and proud to see that Fairfield came up strong for this event, and hopefully this is one of many more to come."
The K-9 unit is publicly funded, so all of their proceeds come from donations.
