Schumer calls for greater freight train safetyPosted: Updated:
Lawmakers are calling for better safety when it comes to freight trains carrying dangerous materials across the country, and particularly, in the Hudson Valley.
Sen. Chuck Schumer wants to reinstate a rule requiring the trains to have a quick stop braking system.
Schumer points to last year’s CSX train derailment in Newburgh that injured four people and dumped gallons of fuel into the Hudson River. "Our freight train companies are making a fortune in part because of all the oil they're carrying. They're more profitable than they've ever been. They can take a tiny little bit of their profits to maintain and install the ECP brakes, because the ECP brakes are needed for our safety."
According to Schumer, CSX made $5 billion last year in stock buybacks alone.
