Bomb squad checks package outside Rockland County Courthouse

NEW CITY -

A suspicious package shut down the Rockland County Courthouse for short time today.

The Rockland County Sheriff’s Office says a FedEx box addressed to one of the judges was left at the County Clerk’s office next to the courthouse around 7:35 a.m.

The building at 1 S. Main St. in New City was closed, and the Rockland County Bomb Squad was called in to investigate.

Officials say the package turned out to be legal papers for a case and were ‘harmless.’  “We have had a few bomb call-ins and writings on walls in schools which we have cleared. We are on heightened alert 24/7 here,” says Rockland County Sheriff Louis Falco.

The court has reopened and resumed its regularly scheduled day.
