Democrat Skoufis wins Senate seat being vacated by William Larkin

STONY POINT -

Democrat James Skoufis defeated Republican Tom Basile Tuesday in the battle for the 39th District’s Senate seat.

The men were vying for the seat held for decades by retiring Republican William Larkin. The district covers most of Orange and parts of Rockland and Ulster counties.

Skoufis, a six-year state assemblyman and Basile, a Stony Point councilman and deputy town supervisor both ran hard campaigns, focusing on core issues like taxes and the controversial expansion of the Hasidic Kiryas Joel community.
