Patient overcomes hurdles to vote for first time

VALHALLA -

A patient at Blythedale Children's Hospital overcame all odds to vote for the first time on Tuesday.

News 12 followed Amoonthays Khrisat Velazquez as she cast her ballot in this year's elections.

Velazquez was admitted to Blythedale last month intensive rehabilitation following bleeding from the brain.

Prior to her unexpected setback, she was a freshman student at Westchester Community College, studying political science.

She says she's proud to be exercising her right to vote. "Kids need to understand to be more aware, that not everywhere else you get a say in who you want as our leaders and the more the kids come out and exercise rights to vote, the bigger the change we can make"

Blythedale staff had been preparing her for this personal milestone by helping her research the candidates and key issues.
