Election Day produced victories for Democrats across New York.

Rosendale Councilwoman Jen Metzger won the 42nd District seat by a tight margin beating Republican Ann Rabbitt. 

Metzger told News 12 that some of her first initiatives will be to tackle the high cost of health care and find ways, other than through property taxes, to fund local public schools.

Metzger says she knew she had to run for state office to make these changes.

The seat opened up in this district when Republican State Senator John Bonacic announced his retirement earlier this year.

Bonacic had served in the state senate for 15 years.
