The Nassau District Attorney's Office is touting new statistics showing that crime in the county is down about 25 percent over a five-year period.
The data comes from the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services. The numbers show a decrease in major crimes, including rape, robbery, aggravated assault and murder.
Nassau saw 25 homicides in 2013, compared to 17 in 2017.
Nassau District Attorney Madeline Singas credits law enforcement and their efforts to get people into drug treatment programs.
News 12 spoke with attorneys for Hispanic immigrants who say the data does not show that many undocumented immigrants are more afraid now than ever to report crimes.
"Immigrants view police as working hand in hand with ICE," says Elise Damas.
The Nassau numbers are collected from 24 law enforcement agencies throughout the county, including the villages.
News 12 also checked out the Suffolk County crime statistics reported by the state. Total index crimes were down 22 percent over five years, with decreases for homicide and robbery.
But rapes were up considerably countywide, from 53 to 160. Suffolk police say the increase in 2015 was due to the use of the expanded rape reporting.
