Some Westchester officials believe that selling some parking lots surrounding the County Center in White Plains can help solve some money problems in the county.
County officials are hoping to get $22 million for the parking lots to plug a $22 million hole in the $1.8 billion 2019 budget.
In his first budget, County Executive George Latimer proposed selling parking lots along the Bronx River Parkway to a local development. It turns out that there are legal and financial issues that Board of Legislators lawmakers - led by Democrats- are trying to hash out in the weeks before the budget is due.
The biggest question may be whether the Board of Legislators has the authority to sell or lease the land without offering it to White Plains first.
Republicans on the board say they have concerns that the one-shot deal is being rushed through in the 11th hour without a lot of explanation that makes sense.
It’s not clear when or how lawmakers will resolve the issues around the parking lots, but they are up against a timeline because the budget has to be finalized before the end of the year.
The chairman of the Board of Legislators says if they can't reach a deal, taxpayers could be hurt because taxes could go up at least 4 points.
