A White Plains man who was shot and killed by police seven years ago was remembered Monday night.
Marine veteran Kenneth Chamberlain was killed in his home in 2011 after accidentally triggering his medical alert system. Responding officers broke down his apartment door. Police say that is when he lunged at them with a knife.
Chamberlain's attorney said that Chamberlain told police he was a 68-year-old man with a heart condition. He says police vulgarly said they did not care and called him a racial slur.
Earlier this year, the U.S. Attorney's Office decided to not pursue federal charges against the former officers who shot Chamberlain. The victim's son appealed that decision in March.
"God forbid if any other family should have to deal with what my family is dealing with, we will have mechanisms in place to deal with these issues," says Kenneth Chamberlain Jr.
Monday's vigil aimed to bring awareness to those issues.
