Slime products, which are popular with children, are on this year’s “Trouble in Toyland” report issued by the New York Public Interest Research Group.
The group issues warnings about potentially hazardous toys as holiday shopping swings into full gear.
Some brands of the toy goo can contain hazardous levels of boron or borax, according to NYPIRG.
“If ingested, it can lead to nausea, vomiting, long-term reproductive health issues and is possibly fatal in very high doses,” says Kevin Dugan, of NYPIRG.
The group says not all store-bought slimes are dangerous. They recommend only using ones that display an ingredients list or are boron free.
The group says there are other major concerns caused by small toys or balloons that can be choking hazards for children. It also says "smart toys" can listen or have built-in cameras. Those devices, they say, can collect data on children without parents knowing about it.
NYPIRG says to read warning labels carefully and learn everything about a toy before purchasing it.
