A former inmate at the Westchester County Jail says the food behind bars is so bad that he wouldn’t feed it to his dog.

The former inmate, who didn’t want to be identified, spent a weekend behind bars and chose to pay for food rather than eat what the county provides for free.

"We called it ‘glow in the dark.’ All it is is water that they claim is a sauce, peas, carrots so it looks like a glow-in-the-dark child's play toy that's splat,” he says.

“John” spoke to News 12 exclusively following reports of a flyer circulating the jail calling for inmates and even corrections officers to boycott the "free food" and pay to eat at the commissary.

He says there were people converting to Judaism and Islam to get better meals.

It wasn’t the first time this inmate has been at the jail.  His first stint was five years ago. Five years later, he said he was still served the same grits and bologna paste sandwiches.

In a statement, the deputy commissioner of correction tells News 12 that there is not a hunger strike at the jail, and although they receive complaints about food periodically, their facility is otherwise operating normally.

“John” suggests that the county officials try to eat the food themselves and see if they are satisfied with their diet.

News 12 reached out to Aramark, the vendor that supplies food to the County Jail and jails across the country, but has not heard back.
