Parents at a Riverdale school say they only just learned about an incident last week in which a student brought a gun to school.
It happened at Riverdale Kingsbridge Academy, where police say they found a gun in a student's backpack.
Police say a 13-year-old had the gun and handed it off to a 14-year-old student. Both students have been charged with criminal possession of a weapon.
According to parents, they were sent a message Monday from the school's principal saying all students are safe. They said the reason parents were not notified until days later was because the investigation continued through dismissal Friday.
The message that was sent out said extra safety measures were put into place and guidance counselors are available for students.
When reached for comment, the school principal referred News 12 to the Department of Education. In a statement, the DOE said, "There is no place for weapons in our schools, and the NYPD swiftly and safely recovered the item. We are providing the school with additional safety support."
Riverdale Kingsbridge Academy went into a shelter-in just a month ago after a threat was made against the school. The threat was later determined to be unfounded.
