A New Jersey cow took its fate into its own hooves and escaped from a truck bound for a slaughterhouse.
Briana the Bovine led police on a small chase on Interstate-80 in Paterson Thursday after she escaped from the truck around 2:40 a.m.
Police closed the roadway for a time while they corralled the cow, causing a bit of a traffic jam. One officer tried to get the cow under control using a rope but was unsuccessful. Video of the incident shows officers using a tow strap to finally coax the cow back over a guardrail.
Briana was captured and taken to Skylands Animal Sanctuary and Rescue in Wantage.
“No more than 10 minutes from the slaughterhouse when this happened, so she’s very fortunate,” says Skylands founder Mike Stura.
Stura says that Briana will stay in isolation for the time being until they know that she is 100 percent healthy. He says that it is for her own safety and the safety of the other animals who live at the sanctuary.
Briana is the 69th cow to come live at the sanctuary.
A veterinarian checked out Briana and says that she only suffered minor injuries from her fall from the truck.
It was not exactly clear how Briana got out of the truck.
