It’s a large endeavor, but one its organizers say is very important – to connect a series of walking and biking trails to the three main sites of the Sept. 11 attacks.
The trail would connect the World Trade Center to the Flight 93 Memorial in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, to the Pentagon and back.
“To me, it’s holy work,” says Russ Nee, board member of the September 11 National Memorial Trail Alliance.
The 1,400-mile trail includes about 200 miles of biking and hiking paths along a southern and northern route through New Jersey.
Nee says that he hopes that people will walk all of or even just part of the trail to reflect on the lives that were lost during the attack and how it changed the world – all while taking in nature.
“That's the thing we want people to do. We want people to remember and honor and persevere and carry on. And also to go out and still enjoy. Because life is to be enjoyed,” he says.
Most of that trail route overlays existing trails, but the foundation is building new sections of trail to connect them. They are looking for donations. More information can be found at the foundation’s website.
