Fire official: Deadly W. Haverstraw fire "does not appear suspicious"
A fire that killed a 67-year-old man and his dog in West Haverstraw on Sunday does not appear suspicious, according to fire officials.
Firefighters say they got a call just after 11:30 a.m. on Sunday about a fire at a three-family home on Route 9W. When crews arrived they found that flames had burned out the whole right side of the two-and-a-half story wood house.
Crews were able to get the fire under control in around fifteen minutes. That's when they were able to do a search of the home and found the homeowner. "When we got here the fire was blown out the whole right side of the building. In our searches we came across a victim, a male adult, and we pulled him out," says Rockland County Fire Coordinator John Kryger.
Investigators say it looks as though the fire started in a first-floor bedroom where the 67-year-old victim and his pet bulldog were found. They say the exact cause of death has not been determined but there were indications that a medical condition may have contributed to the man's death.
Fire officials say they have not determined a cause for the fire.
