Skimming devices found at gas stations

PHILIPSTOWN -

Authorities are warning motorists that skimming devices were found at gas stations in Putnam County.

The Putnam County Sheriff's Department is cautioning drivers to be on the lookout when using debit or credit cards at gas pumps or ATMs.

They say they are investigating cases where skimming devices have been used to obtain credit card information from gas pumps in the towns of Philipstown and Southeast. It's also happened at several Ulster County gas stations.

Investigators say consumers need to look for signs of damage and pull and twist on the card reader itself because the skimmer will pull loose in most cases. Also, people should shield keypads when entering a PIN at because it may block the view of a hidden camera. And of course it's always a good idea to monitor your credit and debit cards for any suspicious activity.
