A new petition is demanding change at a Scarsdale intersection, saying the local road is dangerous for pedestrians.
Community members say vehicles traveling through the intersection on Garth Road fail to stop or even yield for people crossing the street.
"I walk my daughter across the street every day to bring her to daycare and a lot of times cars don't stop for us in the middle of a crosswalk," says Robert Anic of Scarsdale, who started the petition. "They zoom around us, they go through us."
Almost 1,000 people have already signed the petition so far.
Petition organizers say they would like to see Eastchester officials implement new safety measures such as better markings, new signs or pedestrian crosswalk signals.
Marion Anderson, owner of Cornerstone Children's Center, says they have fire drills in the middle of the day and cars still try to go through the intersection while 30 children are trying to cross the street.
The area has always had high amounts of traffic with 1,800 apartments and 5,000 residents near the area. Years ago, the speed limit along Garth Road was reduce from 30 mph to 25 mph.
Supporters tell News 12 they plan on addressing their concerns in front of Eastchester officials on Jan. 22.
