An off-duty police officer from New Rochelle was killed in a multivehicle accident in the Bronx Wednesday morning.
Police say Brian Kessler, 28, was on his way home from Manhattan when he hit a New York City Parks Department truck head-on. After being pryed from the wreckage, he was transported to NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi, where he was pronounced dead.
Police are working to determine the cause of the accident. Residents say a stretch of Shore Road, where the accident happened, has limited visibility and can be dangerous.
Police say Kessler was assigned to Police Service Area 8 housing, which serves New York City Housing Authority developments in the 43rd and 45th precincts in the Bronx. Officials say he had only been on the job since October. He was also a 2009 graduate of New Rochelle High School and a former employee of the Beechmont Tavern on North Avenue.
Two Parks Department employees suffered minor injuries.
The car involved in the crash has been taken in by authorities for further investigation.
Kessler's building superintendent says he was engaged and proud of being in the NYPD.
