Great Neck's Ashley Davis is looking to make her dream of competing in the Olympics a reality.

The 23-year-old's journey began 20 years ago, when her father signed her up for karate lessons.

Davis' father wanted her to protect herself because growing up biracial presented challenges.

"I didn't know how to identify with myself," she says. "Karate always helped me -- this is what I'm good at."

Davis isn't just good -- she's a two-time world medalist who's trying to qualify for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. It's the first time that karate will be an Olympic sport.

Davis is quick to point out that her sport is more about art and less about violence, calling it "fast and beautiful."

For the next year, Davis will punch and kick around the world, trying to make her Olympic dreams reality. It "would mean everything" to her.
