1 dead in Newburgh shooting; 4 arrested following police chasePosted: Updated:
A man is dead and four people were arrested following a drive-by shooting in Newburgh that led to a police chase.
Police say they were told by witnesses that shots were fired from inside a white SUV on Hasbrouck Street around 10:30 p.m. Friday.
The SUV drove away, but police were able to use video surveillance to identify the car. They then alerted other officers, which led to a police chase that ended in Poughkeepsie.
The car crashed and the suspects fled on foot, but police were able to catch up and arrest them.
Donnell Johnson, 24, and Steven Williams, 29, have been charged with second-degree murder. Kyreem Seiman, 18, and Tysheed McPhee, 23, have been charged with second-degree criminal weapon possession.
The shooting victim has been identified as 40-year-old Jermaine Cooper. Police say he died at the hospital around 2 a.m. Saturday.
Cooper's family says they are in shock and don't know what led up to the deadly incident.
"I don't know what happened but he was a great guy," said Alexander Jackson, a cousin of Cooper's.
