Concerns have emerged that construction at the former Thatched Cottage Catering Hall could endanger a waterway in Centerport.

Some residents are expressing worry about runoff they claim is coming from construction on the site of a new catering facility called The Water's Edge. Centerport resident Jill Weigold says video shows a type of contaminant going from the construction into Mill Pond.

Weigold has spent many hours at the harbor photographing bald eagles and their babies. She says she is concerned the construction may contaminate the water and the fish eagles eat.

Owners of the Water's Edge property allowed News 12 to visit the site to show how they are containing the runoff using bales of hay and plastic screening.

"I know that we have done all the right things, we're Long Island developers and we live here, and we want the community and the environment to thrive," says Christina Whitehurst, of The Water's Edge.

DEC officers also inspected the site and found no violations. The Town of Huntington says its supervisor will meet with concerned residents this week.
