An elderly man was killed in an overnight fire in Newburgh.
A couple noticed smoke coming from the first floor of their multifamily home on Farrington Street Friday night at around 10:30 p.m. They quickly evacuated but couldn't find their neighbor.
Fire crews arrived after an alarm was called in at 11:43 p.m. The fire was contained by about 12:20 a.m. but firefighters stayed on the scene for about six hours to investigate.
The house is considered to be a near total loss.
The couple, Liv and Steven, came back to see what was left of their belongings. They say they're also planning a memorial for their neighbor.
Steven's father Carl says that they had just renovated the house but are just happy they are OK.
"I'm glad they got out alive," Carl says. "A couple of more minutes and they may have not had a staircase to walk out."
The pair did not want to appear on camera, but said that it's important to check up on your neighbors, especially the elderly.
The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
