Traffic moved at a slow speed in Rockland County as flakes quickly blanketed roads Tuesday morning.
The weather conditions made travel tricky on the New York State Thruway, causing a 35 mph speed restriction on the Mario Cuomo Bridge.

The snow soon transitioned to sleet and ice, but plows remained out in full force salting, sanding and clearing the roads to keep commuters safe.

The Highway Department in Clarkstown took advantage of its special GPS system to track its 57 trucks.

"We have a GPS module in every truck that will give us every couple of seconds the speed of the truck and location so we always know where our plow trucks are,” said Clarkstown Supervisor George Hoehmann.
The device will also make sure that the crews clear side streets and hit every neighborhood in the town.

"It's a great way to track our vehicles, it's a great way we can deploy our resources,” says Hoehmann.

The school districts in Rockland County were closed Tuesday, and many people stayed off the roads.
The Clarkstown Highway Department says it is now focused on cleaning up the remaining slushy mess in time for the morning commute Wednesday.
