A criminal investigation is now underway in Mount Vernon after what appears to be a case of snow sabotage.
Police say someone messed with more than two dozen of the city's snow-fighting trucks by stuffing rubber gloves in the gas tanks.

City officials say the gloves were found stuffed up the gas tanks of their fleet of salt, sanitation and plow trucks and they didn't realize it until the trucks started breaking down.

“Approximately 30 trucks were sabotaged this morning. For whatever the reason, I don't know,” says Edgar Torres, maintenance supervisor.

Police say they don't have any leads or suspects in custody, but they believe someone broke into the DPW facility somewhere between 3 p.m. Monday and 5 a.m. Tuesday and placed the gloves in the gas tanks.

All the gloves were removed from the trucks with the help of county mechanics, and they were returned to service shortly thereafter.
Police are examining surveillance video to look for clues, but they didn't offer any motives.
Mount Vernon Mayor Richard Thomas voluntarily put himself at the center of the situation.

“This is a direct attack on me for serving the people of Mount Vernon. I’m not going to stop,” he says.

Police tell News 12 that when the suspect is caught, they will face criminal charges.
