Police: 70-year-old man fatally stabbed in Soundview bodega
Police say a 70-year-old man was fatally stabbed on Westchester Avenue, and a woman is in custody.
Police say they responded to a 911 call at a bodega on 1750 Westchester Ave. shortly before 12:30 p.m. Friday.
A cashier at the grocery store says the man was known in the neighborhood as Santana, and that he was just stopping by for a cup of coffee when the suspect picked a fight with him.
Witnesses say the woman is known in the area as often being intoxicated. They say she walked into the store, started arguing with the man before calling him a racist and spitting on him. At that point, employees asked her to leave.
But witnesses say 15 minutes later, the woman came back with a knife and stabbed the man twice in the chest. The man was taken to Jacobi Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
Police arrested Madelyn Tamarez, 31, Friday on murder, manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon charges. Sources say Tamarez has a long arrest history dating back to 2009 with charges including larceny and impersonation.
Workers say the woman can also be seen in a video at another bodega up the block acting belligerently and defecating on the floor.
Employees say the victim was an Army veteran who lived nearby at New Era Veterans Home.
The man's identity has not been released pending family notification.
