NYPD warns officers living on LI about possible MS-13 threat
The NYPD has sent an alert saying the MS-13 gang may be targeting officers who live on Long Island for "street cred."
It warns officers on Long Island to be careful leaving their homes and encourages them to change up their travel routes, if possible.
"Out of an abundance of caution an officer safety alert was sent of an unverified threat by MS13 targeting law enforcement officers," the NYPD press office said in a statement.
According to several published reports, the alert mentioned that MS-13 may be looking to attack officers living in the Central Islip, Brentwood and Patchogue areas.
Community activist Sergio Argueta says circulating an unverified threat does a disservice to officers and puts community members at risk.
Suffolk Police Commissioner Geraldine Hart wouldn't address the details of the reported threat. But the department did send a statement saying: "The Suffolk County Police Department is in continuous contact with all of our public safety partners, including the New York City Police Department, and we will continue to work together to address any threats made to law enforcement personnel."
The NYPD says the threats are still considered unverified.
