City officials kicked off the annual Yonkers Arts Weekend in the Carpet Mills Arts District by unveiling a new mural.
Artists say the street art depicts a woman island chief, who is representing strong woman in their lives and diversity in Yonkers. "The Tieno nation tribe, they didn’t wear headdresses like this. It’s more like a North American Aztec we wanted to incorporate.  That, plus her features are more of an African descent," says artist Jose Gonzalez.
Yonkers Arts Weekend is the county’s largest urban arts festival featuring 300 artists, sculptors and performers.
It runs Saturday through Sunday. There will be free buses running from the city’s downtown area to the festival.
