Mayor Bill de Blasio announced another step Friday in the expansion of speed cameras at city schools.

De Blasio announced that all 750 school zones will have at least one speed camera within the next 12 months. The plan to add hundreds of new speed cameras has already been in the works, with Gov. Andrew Cuomo signing off on a bill earlier this month.

The cameras' hours of operation will also expand on school days from 6 a.m. through 10 p.m. beginning in July. They will also be in operation on school vacation days, and summer weekdays.

Next month, city residents will notice an aggressive public awareness campaign about the changes.

While de Blasio says he is happy with the changes, he wants to see more action taken.

"We need Albany to pass another law to increase the fines for multiple violators," says de Blasio. "We need folks who consistently break the law and consistently speed to face higher penalties, and for the worst offenders, we need to see their licenses suspended once and for all."

Drivers caught speeding on these cameras will face a $50 fine.
