A Valhalla teacher and soccer coach gave the gift of life to a New Jersey man he dd not know.
Gino Spina got a second a second chance at life when Sandro Prosperino gave him a kidney.
"If it wasn't for him, God knows where I would be right now," says Spino.
Prosperino says his motive to donate was simple.
"I come from a very giving family in terms of my parents, and they always modeled the selflessness of giving of themselves," says Prosperino.
Prosperino was determined to give a part of himself, and so he started to search for someone in need of a kidney.
Prosperino reached out to Ed Kranepool, retired first baseman who played for the New York Mets, who needed a kidney.
Kranepool had already found a donor and had his transplant at Stony Brook University Hospital on May 7.
Prosperino was asked if he was still interested in making a donation. When he said yes, Spina, who was undergoing dialysis daily, got the call from Hackensack Hospital. And it was a perfect match.
"After the surgery was done, me and Sandro were the only two patients that he had that recovered so fast," said Spina. "I went back to work within a month."
After Prosperino recovered from his surgery, he was warmly welcomed by his coworkers and especially his students at Valhalla High School. He returned with the greatest lesson for his students.
"I just hope, in their own way, that they just help the people around them," said Prosperino.
