Wednesday was the last day of school in North Rockland, and it is also the last year the district will deal with traditional homework.

School administrators say they have decided to do away with homework for the upcoming academic year, thanks in part to two Stony Point students at Farley Elementary School.

Sixth graders Chris DeLeon and Neko Feely started a petition last year, arguing traditional homework was stressful and also pointless, because students could often find answers online.

"Neko and I were getting really stressed out with our homework," says DeLeon. "And sometimes we felt it was unnecessary because it was just repeating what we did in class."

After more than 100 signatures, administrators formed a task group to examine the practice and eventually agreed.

Now, students won't have to complete weekend assignments or mandatory reading logs. "Home learning" will count less and all assignments will be geared toward encouraging curiosity, not preventing it.

Administrators say several other districts in the area are now considering implementing similar policies.

The new "home learning" policy will apply to all eight schools in the North Rockland district and will go into effect when classes resume on Sept. 3.
