Final numbers in: Patterson-Howard leads Thomas by 209 votes in mayoral primaryPosted: Updated:
The final numbers for the Democratic primary for Mount Vernon mayor are in, with Shawyn-Patterson Howard as the unofficial winner.
She leads incumbent Mayor Richard Thomas by 209 votes.
The Board of Elections allowed Patterson-Howard and the Thomas administration to watch them open and count the remaining absentee and affidavit ballots Wednesday. This comes one day after Thomas filed a lawsuit against the Board of Elections and his primary challengers, insisting the election was rigged.
"There's one thing that anybody who runs for office has to be able to do, which is to accept when you didn't win. The people of Mount Vernon have spoken. They prefer to have a new mayor," says Democratic Commissioner of Elections Reginald Lafayette.
The Board of Elections plans to certify Patterson-Howard as the official Democratic nominee on July 15.
