Student with autism receives silent standing ovation at graduation

CARMEL -

A Putnam County high school student with autism received a heart-warming send-off at his graduation ceremony.

Jack Higgins spent eight years in Carmel High School's special education program, and his parents were concerned he would be overwhelmed at the ceremony because of the crowds and loud noise.

So when it came time for Higgins to come up on stage to receive his diploma, the principal asked everyone to remain silent.

Instead, all of the graduates and attendees stood up and gave the young man a silent standing ovation.

Higgins and his parents say they truly appreciate the gesture.
