Rockland neighbor: Beautiful pond is quickly turning deadly

Posted: Updated:
ROCKLAND COUNTY -

Some Rockland residents are concerned after seeing several dead fish in a pond at Havestraw Bay Park.

They say the dead fish have floated to the top of the water, causing an awful smell.

A spokesperson for Rockland County says the pond is a former clay pit with no inflow for water, so it strictly relies on rainfall to fill up.

Since there hasn't been a significant amount of rain, the pond is drying up. No water means no oxygen, and no oxygen in the water means fish can't breathe.

One neighbor says he's hoping the county can do something and fast because the beautiful pond is quickly turning deadly.

"All the fish have been dying, now you have birds coming in, blue heron, egrets, they're all coming in here to feed," says Owen Cramsie. "Eating these fish that are just decaying. As you can smell, it's terrible. The flies are terrible. We're just trying to get something done."
