A former Brooklyn resident is facing charges after law officials say he is affiliated with ISIS.

Ruslan Asainov, who is being accused of providing support and training members of the terrorist organization ISIS, was arraigned at Brooklyn Federal Court Friday.

He was arraigned on a complaint which his attorney says is not a formal charge. Asainov is pending formal charges and will know whether he will be indicted within the next 30 days.

According to the complaint, Asainov lived in Brooklyn before traveling to Syria in 2013 to become a part of the terrorist group. He then allegedly became a sniper, and was responsible for training other ISIS members to use weapons.

In court, Asainov appeared very hesitant to speak to the judge, keeping his head down most of the time. His attorney says she feels it's because he answers to a higher power and doesn't consider the court to be a legitimate authority. She says she feels he wanted to get that point across.

Asainov's attorney also says she imagines that her client will be indicted for providing material support to ISIS.
