Body of missing swimmer recovered in Lake Carmel
The body of a missing swimmer has been found in Lake Carmel.
Police confirm they've recovered a body from the lake early this morning, and they're waiting to release his identity until family members have been contacted.
The Lake Carmel Fire Department tells News 12 that a 54-year-old Connecticut man told his wife he was going to swim Saturday afternoon, but never came home.
When they arrived on the scene that night, they found the man’s car parked at beach number 5, where there are no lifeguards.
They searched for him until late Saturday night and resumed yesterday morning, with three boats canvassing the water, and a helicopter above. Officials say the search was extra difficult because the water is not clear and around 11 feet deep.
When the search resumed Monday morning, an officer saw a body floating in the water about 1,000 yards off the shoreline. “One of our officers patrolling around the lake had a pair of binoculars, he thought he saw something out in the middle of the lake. We sent some boats out in the area, with the assistance of the sheriff's office and Lake Carmel Park District employees, went out, discovered the body, recovered it and brought it back in,” says Kent Police Chief Kevin Owens.
Owens says the man swam in Lake Carmel regularly, so it's still unclear what happened, although it's not suspicious.
The lake is back open to swimmers and boaters, and the chief reminds people to use caution on the water. “Don’t swim alone, swim where there are lifeguards on duty, [don’t] use drugs [or] alcohol if you were to go swimming.”
