A police chase ended in a head-on crash on Route 17K in Newburgh, injuring at least seven people.
News 12 reporter Blaise Gomez’s video posted on her Twitter feed shows that multiple cars were involved in the crash.
Witnesses say a black Chevy Tahoe was being pursued by police just before the crash. They say they saw troopers approach the SUV with guns drawn on the four people inside. The witnesses say the officers holstered their weapons when they saw the extent of their injuries.
State police say one of the people in the SUV suffered serious internal injuries and was taken in a medevac.
Police say the SUV was flagged by troopers around 11 a.m. on the New York Thruway as the car of a suspect wanted for questioning in a felony investigation.
Authorities say the SUV led troopers on a high-speed, 15-minute chase on the Thruway and Route 17K after failing to pull over. It eventually crashed head-on into three cars in front of a car wash.
"You just heard a loud boom - like an explosion,” said Gary Carbone, who witnessed the crash. “I looked over my shoulder and I [saw] the black [SUV] in the air. It did a complete 360 and then, like literally within seconds, there were officers everywhere, guns drawn.
There was no word on any arrests and police have not yet released the names of anyone involved.
