The summer harvest is in full swing on farms across New Jersey, but one place you might not expect to find crops -- a farm in the middle of Newark.

The three-acre farm is located in the middle of Newark, called Hawthorne Avenue Farm.

“Everything from all over the world,” says Community Gardner Badi Muhammad. “Africa, Jamaica, United States, Trinidad, Bangladesh, Malaysia, China Japan, any part of the planet, we have them here.”

The farm is run by the Greater Newark Conservancy.
Half of it, rows of everything from onions to raspberries, even a small apple and peach orchard, is farmed by volunteers, interns and employees with food donated to local soup kitchens and sold at farmers markets.
The other half is 250 community garden plots.

“It's a pleasure and it's very enlightening and it's very fulfilling and it just shows you what life is actually about,” says Community Gardner Jaquel Moore.

The one block parcel that contains the farm was cleared of homes by the state to build a school, but the plans fell through.
The Greater Newark Conservancy now holds a year-to-year lease with the state that allows them to use the land for the farm.
