The Goshen Historic Track barn is almost ready to reopen nearly two years after a massive fire tore through one of the horse barns.
The fire department determined an electrical issue sparked the flames. All of the people and horses got out safely.
George Casale, vice president of Goshen Historic Track Board, says they were lucky.
"Had this happened just a little later at night, and the wind kicked up, we could've lost the museum and all the surrounding track and the barns. So we're really very fortunate," Casale says.
For the last two years, the track and the Harness Racing Museum have been rebuilding. The project has cost almost $1 million. While a large portion was covered by insurance, the nonprofit organization still had to raise a lot of money to rebuild.
Casale says the new facility is going to be a storage space for the museum. Officials will be able to change out exhibits and restore old artifacts.
Construction is expected to be complete next month.
The track is still fundraising for a portion of the barn that burned down but has not yet been rebuilt -- the Blacksmith Shop. During racing season it serves as a place for horses to get new shoes and provides an opportunity for children to come learn about the horses and harness racing.
