Suffolk SPCA: Brentwood woman leaves dog for days without water, shelter

A Brentwood woman was arrested on animal cruelty charges after being accused of leaving her dog outside for days with no water or shelter.

The Suffolk SPCA says 12-year-old pitbull-shepard mix Grumpy was near death when a good Samaritan at this gated retirement community in Middle Island spotted him tied up in a yard Tuesday.

Officials say Grumpy was left out in the blazing heat for several days without food or water.

The Suffolk SPCA says Grumpy belongs to Crystal Booker, 26, who lives on Bruce Drive in Brentwood. The SPCA charged Booker with failure to provide proper sustenance and veterinary care.

Officials say Booker left the dog at her father's house in Middle Island.

News 12 is told a vet is trying to save Grumpy's life. The dog is being cared for at the Brookhaven Animal Shelter.

Booker is scheduled to appear in court on a charge of cruelty to animals on Oct. 22.
