The Betsy Ross flag controversy has made its way to Mamaroneck Village.
The flag can be seen flying above 209 Halstead Ave. in between a Trump and a Marine Corps flag.
Back in July, the Colonial-era flag made headlines after Nike pulled a shoe featuring the flag design. Former NFL star Colin Kaepernick spoke out against the flag. The Wall Street Journal reported in July that Kaepernick told Nike that he and others are offended by it because it dates back to a time of widespread slavery.
The owner of the Mamaroneck Village building, who is a Marine Corps veteran, says he put up the flag as a sign of patriotism.
Mamaroneck Mayor Tom Murphy says he received numerous calls about the flag.
“If this flag sparks a civil conversation about what this symbol means to people, and how some symbols can be offensive, maybe we can listen to each other and talk to each other,” he says.
