Students try to save bus driver after crash on I-84

Posted: Updated:

Some Orange County students attempted to save bus driver who suffered a medical condition and crashed on Friday, but she was later pronounced dead.

Officials say Denise Schmidt, 53, of Warwick, suffered a medical condition and became slumped over the steering wheel as the bus was accelerating up the ramp to merge onto I-84 westbound.  The bus then traveled off the shoulder of the roadway and down into a small, grassy ravine, striking a tree.

There were 22 students on the bus ranging from ages 15 to 17, along with a tennis coach.  Schmidt was not breathing and the students and coach began CPR while waiting for first responders.

None of the students were injured.

Schmidt was taken to Orange Medical Center, where she was pronounced deceased.
