Thousands attend funeral Mass for NYPD Detective Brian Mulkeen
Family, friends and fellow officers gathered Friday to say a final farewell to a hero from Monroe who was killed in the line of duty.
The funeral Mass for NYPD Detective Brian Mulkeen, 33, was held at the Church of Sacred Heart in Monroe. Wake services for Mulkeen were held Thursday at the Smith, Seamen and Quackenbush Funeral Home in Monroe, where hundreds of mourners stood outside in the rain for hours along flag-lined streets.
Mulkeen was killed by friendly fire in the Bronx last Sunday while trying to subdue an armed suspect. Officials say Mulkeen along with five members of the Bronx Anti-Crime Unit were on patrol in Edenwald around 12:30 a.m. when they tried to stop two men on East 229th Street.
They say one of the men, 27-year-old alleged gang member Antonio Williams, took off running.
Officials say Mulkeen then chased after, tackled and disarmed Williams of a loaded gun. During the struggle, police say Williams attempted to reach for Mulkeen's gun.
They say Mulkeen managed to fire several rounds, which then prompted the five other officers to open fire.
According to NYPD reports, 15 shots were fired in a matter of 10 seconds. Mulkeen fired five shots, while the other officers fired 10 shots.
Two of those rounds fatally struck Mulkeen. He later died at a Bronx hospital.
Williams was also shot and pronounced dead at the scene.
Mulkeen graduated from Monroe-Woodbury High School and later from Fordham University with a degree in finance, but his family says his passion and desire to make a difference drew him to law enforcement.
Mulkeen started his career in law enforcement at the Tuxedo Police Department and pursued his dream of becoming an NYPD officer.
Officials say Mulkeen made about 270 arrests and took illegal guns off the streets during his time as an officer.
News 12 is told Mulkeen was going to start volunteering at Fordham. He would have been a coach for the track and field program.
He leaves behind his parents, a brother, a sister and his girlfriend. The couple had recently moved to Yorktown Heights.
Mulkeen is the second member of the NYPD killed by friendly fire in the line of duty this year. Mulkeen was posthumously promoted to detective.
