State Sen. Carlucci discusses plans for future domestic violence bill
State Sen. David Carlucci held a roundtable discussion Friday to address domestic violence and its impact on communities.
The state senator was joined by local organizations, judges and survivors of domestic violence, to talk about how to properly protect victims and their families.
Angela Rivera shared her story.
"He was screaming and ranting that if I did not come back, he was going to drive my children off a cliff that we lived nearby," she said, remembering a frightening phone call.
"The female officer came to my house and said to me, Do you think he's really going to do this because you know if I write this report, we're going to call CPS and you're going to be investigated also.’"
Out of fear that she would lose her children, she didn't file a report. It’s a situation she says domestic violence victims often find themselves in.
State Sen. Carlucci says he intends on presenting potential legislation in Albany that could include mandatory training for police officers and judges on how best to handle domestic violence-related conflict.
"Our laws are out of date,” he says. “They need to be dusted off and brought into the 21st century because people are being killed every day.”
State Sen. Carlucci says he will present the legislation in January and hopes for passage in 2020.
